The Immigrant and the American Dream - Referat
THE IMMIGRANT AND THE AMERICAN DREAM
Short Summary
-1921, Ewa & her sister Magda arrive in New York as immigrants (their parents died in WW1)
-Magda mustn‘t come with Ewa, bc of her lung disease
-Bruno bribes an officer to let Ewa go
-He prostitutes her, bc she has to earn money to release Magda
-He falls in love with her
-Ewa gets to know Orlando, who also falls for her
-Orlando & Bruno fight in the theatre bc of her, and get fired
-Orlando goes to Bruno‘s home to see Ewa
-Bruno arrives and kills Orlando
-The police chases Ewa instead of him
-With help of her aunt & Bruno, she finally has enough money to release her sister and they start a new life in New Jersey
Central Aspects of the American Dream
Dream:
-dream of freedom, equality and the pursuit of happiness
-Can do confidence -> Ewa reaches her goal to release her sister, bc she worked hard enough (from rags to riches)
Nightmare:
-Deportation of immigrants
-No freedom -> Ewa depends on Bruno
-Low skilled work (-> prostitution)
Immigrants couldn‘t live without political restraints, although it was promised
Social Conditions in the USA (1920's)
-Immigration changed American policy
-1900-1915, about 13million people had come the USA
-They had all come for the American Dream
-USA was no longer possible to accept them all -> Immigration Quota Law (1924) -> limmited number of anual immigrants
Ewa as a representative of the American Dream
-Went to America to start a better life -> bc of the American Dream
-Can do confidence -> she never gave up
-She worked hard as a prostitute, although she hated her job and thought it was a sin to do this
-> all in all she shows, that you can get whatever you want, if you want it hard enough, but you have to give up a bit of yourself to reach it
