Essay: Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Quite a number of people in the world my classmates and I also know a lot about Shakespeare’s life and plays. Almost everybody has heard about his famous tragedy of “Romeo and Juliet”. Even after Shakespeare’s death the play has been performed on stage again and again but we all know that the (hi)story is very old, that is why I and others ask ourselves: should “Romeo and Juliet” be performed on stage nowadays?
First of all I would like to stress that “Romeo and Juliet” is the most famous classic love story in the English literary tradition and the only tragedy which Shakespeare wrote entirely as a love story. The language that he used to communicate their love for each other was written so poetically. Love is naturally the most important theme.
You also have to consider that Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers of English literature and one of the world’s excellent dramatists. Everybody has to learn something about Shakespeare in school.
For this reason it would be a shame if classes could not take a look at “Romeo and Juliet”.
On the other hand the language they speak in “Romeo and Juliet” is very difficult to understand for people of our generation. It is boring to listen to the play but if you try very hard to understand something, you will make it.
Furthermore the story is very old and represents the oldfashioned kind of imagination but nowadays in other countries you can also see circumstances like in “Romeo and Juliet”.
In my opinion “Romeo and Juliet” should be performed on stage nowadays because this story should not fall into oblivion. If this happens we will forgetten Shakespeare and that would be fatal. I also want to go to the theatre with my class to watch the play because this story is really unique, and I like it. Going to the theatre is better than reading “Romeo and Juliet”.
