- 1st January - New Year’s Day
The Irish celebrate the New Year's night in their favourite Pub. Only the people in bigger cities celebrate the New Year with a firework. In the morning in Southern Ireland many people dive for few minutes into a cold sea and wear a special custom. This is called the "New Year's Swim".
- 17th March - St. Patrick’s Day
The St. Patrick’s Day is the most important public holiday in Ireland. The people celebrate the Irish saints. It takes place in Dublin and it takes 4 days long with a colourful parade and with a big and beautiful firework. The Irish celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day all over the world.
- 21st April - Easter Monday
- 5th May - May Bank Holiday
- 2nd June- June Bank Holiday
- 4th August – August Bank Holiday
- 27th October- October Bank Holiday
On Bank Holiday are all shops and banks closed.

The Emerald Isle
Ireland is an European country and it’s located in the Atlantic Ocean beside Great Britan. 3.5 million people live in Ireland. Ireland is a peaceful country with hospitable peoples. The green island has lovely scenery. There are green landscapes, valleys, cliffs and a lot of water ways.
Ireland is popular for his turbulent history. As tourist you can do a lot of things in Ireland. You can go fishing, swimming, horse riding, walking,
ycling or you can go by ship and be your own skipper. The most tourists discover Ireland by themselves. They go by bike, by horse, by their own ship or the walk.
Ireland's Sights
The Irish past left one’s mark on the island. There are old cathedrals, churches, monasteries and Celtic crosses between the wonderful gardens and parks. In Ireland there are a lot of historical castles which carry the middle ages in the 21st century. You can see an impressive and a trait nature which is inimitable in Europe.
- Aran Island
Aran Islands are situated in the middle of the
Galway Bay. The mystical Aran Islands cuts into
one large island called Inishmore and two
smaller islands called Inishmaan and Inisheer.
There are a lot of ruins of early Christian
monasteries and churches, the best known
being Dun Aengus. The cliffs, especially on the
Atlantic side, are over 50 meters high but there
are also 120 meters high cliffs.
- Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher are situated in the west coast in near of Doolin. The cliffs are over 200 meters high and 8 kilometers large and they look very dramatic and impressive. The highest point with 230 meters is the O’Briens Tower which is a lighthouse. The O’Briens Tower was built 1835.
- Rock of Cashel
The Rock of Cashel is in the south of Ireland and it’s a chalk rock near Cashel. There are a lot of historical buildings. In former times there lived the king of Munster. Later there was built a lot of churches and a tower. There is also a cemetery with a high cross from the 12th century and ruins of an old monastery called Hore Abbey.
- Clonmacnoise
Clonmacnoise is the most popular monastery
ruin in Ireland. It’s situated in the middle of
Ireland near the river Shannon. There are two
towers, a lot of very old high crosses and many
churches. In front of Clonmasnoise is an
exhibition of the history from the monastery.
- Connemara
Connemara is a beautiful countryside near Galaway. The Twelve Pins which are mountains over 730 meters high and lovely white beaches are in Connemara. Through the whole area run sheep. The holy Croagh Patrick which is a 765 meters high mountainis is on the verge of Connemara . In north of Cannemara is the cliffy coast with hidden and underground channels and caves. The Kylemore Abbey, an old castle is not far away.
Ring of Kerry
The Ring of Kerry is a part of the mystical and unspoilt Ireland. It is in Southern Ireland. There are some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. The Ring of Kerry is inimitable.

County Kildare and the County Wicklow. Dublin is divided into north and south with the river Liffey. The wealthier and the more modern part is the south side of Dublin. On the north side of the river there is the historical part.

- Christ Church Cathedral
The Christ Church Cathedral was built 1169
under the direction of the Norman knight,
Strongbow. In former times it was a wooden
church which was built 1038 for the Viking king
of Dublin. The gothic appearance came from
the many restorations. A crypt below to the
cathedral which is one of the largest in Britain
and Ireland and is thought to be Dublin's oldest
surviving building.
- St. Patrick’s Cathedral
The St. Patrick’s Cathedral is with 110 meters the highest catholic church of Ireland. This Churchwas built in 1191. In the church there are a lot of spectacular memorials and the tomb of
Jonathan Swift- a popular author.
- Dublina
Dublina is a museum and it is situated
beside the Christ Church Cathedral.
Dublina shows Dublin’s history in a
multi-media show and in a simulation
of Dublin in the middle ages.

Irelands provinces
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster. The provinces are divided again into counties. Connacht cuts into 6 counties, Leinster in 12 counties, Munster in 6 counties and Ulster in 9 counties.
Connacht
Connacht is on the west side of Ireland. It’s stamped by the cliffy countryside, thousand miles long stonewalls, the wild Altlantic and the often changing sky. There are also a lot of old castles, towers and ruins of old buildings. The most people who live in Connacht speak Gaelic and they show their culture. The largest city of Connacht is Galway.
Leinster
Leinster is on the east side of Ireland. In Leinster live more than half of the Irish population. There are a lot of mountains, white beaches and deep valleys. The past left one’s marks which are be an old burial chamber, Celtic monasteries, high crosses and ruins of Irish history. But in Leinster are also modern cities like Dublin.
Munster
Munster is on the south side of Ireland. Munsters countryside has many faces. On the one hand there are a lot of small farms and villages and on the other hand are the busy seaports. Munsters biggest city is Cork, a lively and self-confident city with many memorials.
Ulster
Ulster is on the north side of the island. It’s Northern Ireland.
There are a lot of different cultures, cultivated forests, magnificent manor-houses and gardens, industry buildings, historical sights, dramatic cliffs, large beaches and a lot of rivers and lakes. Ulster’s largest city is Belfast. Northern Ireland is dangerous for tourists because the troubles between the Roman Catholics and the Protestants.
