St. Valentins Day
-In most western countries 14th February is know as Lover‘s Day
-in the USA as in Britain, people send anonymous cards and gifts to their loved ones
-Modern Valentine's Day symbols: heart-shaped outline,doves,Cupid
-Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards
St. Patricks Day
-March 17th is the feast of the patron saint of Ireland.
-Every year there is a huge parade in New York City
- The day is generally characterized by:the attendance of church services,wearing of green attire ,the lifting of Lenten,drinking alcohol.
-Today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated saints day in the world.
Flag Day
-June 14th is the anniversary of the first official American flag.
-It is celebrated with parades, speeches and ceremonies in the schools.
-Most citizens fly the flag in front of their houses and work-places.
-Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade is at Fairfield, Washington
-Fairfield has held a parade every year
Independent Day
-Independence Day, commonly known as the 4th of July
-Is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration
-Declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
-Independence Day is commonly associated with :fireworks, parades, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games and other things.
Columbus Day
-The official date of Christopher Columbus' landing in New World is October 12th
-Columbus Day is celebrated throughout the nation on the second Monday in October.
-In New York City there is a huge parade and in San Francisco they re-enact his landing
-Officially in various areas since the early 20thcentury.
Thanksgiving
-Thanksgiving is the oldest American holiday.
-It was first celebrated in October 1621.
-Their first thanksgiving feast lasted three days and the celebration was repeated every year.
-Until 1863, celebrations were limited to a few sates in the east, but then it was made a national holiday
Halloween
-It’s a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31
-Is celebrated by American children even more than in Britain.
-More of the children go from house to house asking for fruit, candies or money. If you don’t give them anything they play tricks on your house.
-Typical festive Halloween activities trick-or-treating,attending costume parties, and other things.
