The music is Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 of 1902. During World War I, it was used as the theme for part of a poem by A. C. Benson (1862-1925) [the homosexaul Catholic convert son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, if memory serves right], by the music hall star Marie Lloyd. It was immediately adopted as perhaps the second most sung national song after God Save the King. Perhaps the reason was that it can be sung with much more gusto.

Die Nationalhymne des vereinigten Königreiches ist die wohl älteste aller Nationalhymnen. Sie taucht erstmals bereits 1745 in verschiedensten Publikationen auf. Wer genau den Text oder auch die Melodie zur Hymne verfasst hat, lässt sich heute leider nicht mehr zufriedenstellend klären. Man vermutet jedoch ihren Ursprung irgendwo im 17. Jahrhundert.
Es gibt keine offizielle Version der Hymne, der heutige Text der Hymne geht auf den von 1745 zurück, nur das jeweils das Wort "König" durch das Wort "Königin" ersetzt worden. Bei offiziellen Anlässen wird nur die erste Strophe der Hymne gesungen. Weder diese (noch auch die anderen Strophen) wurden jemals offiziell durch das Parlament oder durch königliche Proklamation zur Nationalhymne erklärt; sie wurden und werden sozusagen aus Tradition gesungen.
